Excelsior Erosion Control Logs

Biodegradable Erosion Control Logs and Wattles

Excelsior erosion control logs are 100% natural and biodegradable solution for erosion control and stabilization. Perfect for erosion control along riverbanks, slopes, streams, hillsides, and other erosion prone areas. These biodegradable erosion control logs and wattle are made of curled Aspen wood shavings, making them an economical sediment control. Our soft curled fibers produce porous, interlocking barbs that let water and sediment pass through the unique Excelsior matrix. Note: Coir, like many products sourced from overseas, is less available due to trouble with supply and getting the products through port systems. Across the entire industry, Coir is not only less available, but also more expensive. However, we do have erosion control alternatives. Excelsior Erosion Control Logs Details

Excelsior erosion control logs create biodegradable borders along waterways, shorelines, and other slopes. They are great alternatives to Coir for slopes that are already eroding and needing stabilization. Our 100% natural logs are ideal for planting seedlings in eroded areas. Simply make holes in the fiber logs, plant the seedlings, and allow them time to grow. Our fiber logs are eco-friendly, and degrade over time, enriching the soil and environment. Made with Aspen wood fibers, water filters through (not underneath) the porous Excelsior fiber.  The velocity of water is reduced and sediment retained, which slows the erosion process. Parks and Recreation departments use Excelsior fiber logs in public parks or rec areas, restoring creeks, streams, and other waterways. For more information about Excelsior logs, call us.

Excelsior Erosion Control Wattle Details

Excelsior's wattle design is the perfect solution for perimeter controls for check dams, on slopes, at curb cuts and around drain inlets. Although similar to Excelsior logs in design and purpose, the inner material of our wattles is less dense and more flexible. Made from 100% Aspen wood shavings, the biodegradable fibers are distributed evenly throughout the flexible cylinder, enabling it to contour to terrain and inlets.  Often used as an erosion preventative, Excelsior wattles offer greater flexibility and filtration options, including directing groundwater flow while still filtering out sediment. Construction projects also use fiber logs on site to contain contaminants and keep them out of public areas, preventing erosion pollution fines. Excelsior Log Installation and Best Practices

Secure Excelsior logs and wattle to riverbanks or streambeds with the help of a biodegradable stake or wedges to hold the Aspen fiber log in place. The wedges or stakes are place on either side of the log when installing. If your site requires increased stability, then the stakes or wedges are placed directly in the center of the Excelsior logs to help keep them in place. Excelsior 100% natural logs and fibers are designed to have a lifespan anywhere from 2 to 4 years, depending on site conditions.

Planting seedlings with your Excelsior logs only adds to their stability. We recommend you use local vegetation within the Aspen wood log matrix. Plants can be placed around the logs or even in the Excelsior logs to encourage deep root growth as the Aspen logs degrade. The vegetation growth within the logs will create a natural erosion control barrier that remains long after the Excelsior log degrades to enrich the surrounding soil.

Ask about our erosion control accessories! Accessories are critical to installing any of our Excelsior logs, mats, or erosion control blankets properly. Available accessories include:

  • Biodegradable Stakes

Excelsior Erosion Control Log Frequently Asked Questions

Excelsior logs and wattle are all-natural fibers made from Aspen wood shavings. Excelsior erosion control products can be used for a variety of erosion and sediment control applications due to the nature of the Excelsior matrix. The soft curled fibers produce a porous, interlocking barb that let water and sediment pass through. They are eco-friendly and economical.

The lifespans of Excelsior erosion products vary, depending on the product type and site environment. Excelsior logs and wattles generally last 2 to 4 years. Most alternative erosion control blankets and mats last from 4 to 6 years. Excelsior Aspen wood erosion control products degrade and become part of the surrounding soil.

Excelsior products are 100% biodegradable, made from natural Aspen wood shavings. Over the course of their lifespans, the logs degrade, enriching the surrounding soil. The composting process that occurs over time with Excelsior products aids fertilization and helps plants continue to protect against erosion after the fabric is gone.
